TRANSIT OF ANIMALS (ROAD & RAIL) ORDER 1975

  • Where two or more horses are carried loose in an undivided vehicle, the hind feet of each horse shall be unshod.
  • Where the floor of the vehicle is not constructed on an anti-slip design, it will be covered with a sufficient quantity of bedding litter.
  • When a partition is used to separate horses in a vehicle, it shall be not less than 1.27 metres in height.
  • The horses being transported must be able to stand in a natural position and in any case the height inside the vehicle must not be less than 1.98 metres.
  • A mare with a foal at foot or a stallion shall not be carried in the same undivided vehicle as another horse.
  1. the movement takes place back and forth between the same two premises;
  2. you are transporting your own horse or a horse kept on the same premises as your horse and it is being used for private recreational or private sporting purposes only;
  3. The vehicle is used by the occupier of racing stables licensed by the Jockey Club, for the carriage of horses kept at those stables to or from race meetings, or to or from a place at which horses kept at those stables undergo training for racing.
  • The law forbids the use of excessive force, electric goads or prods, and sticks, whips, crops or other implements to hit or prod the horse. Sticks should only be used as an extension of the arm for persuasion or encouragement and not to beat the animal with.
